Behind the Green Door
Oil paint on primed wood and frame.
98 x 66 x 10 cm
“Behind the Green Door” was originally painted in landscape format and titled, “Red Wave” which is still visible on the back side. Matt works out his compositions from all angles. As a result, his paintings may find new orientations later in the process. “Behind the Green Door” is certainly one of these and now hangs in portrait format.
The artist explains,
“This is a painting of San Francisco, a memory of my life there in
the Two-Thousands. Originally, I titled it “Red Wave” in
landscape format because of the unmistakable red wave across the
center, but also in response to the news in the US regarding the 2022
elections. But that title never felt right. It was the deep red and
blues that reminded me of the Golden Gate bridge and the coast there.
When I flipped the painting, it was suddenly an urban snap-shot from
the Mission District. Now the painting was undeniably entangled with
the neighborhood I lived in there and a memorable movie experience I
had with a friend there.”
