"View From Notre Dame," Oil paint on wood panel and frame, 50 x 40 x 6 cm, 2023.
“View From Notre Dame” combines the artists memories of being in the Paris cathedral with feelings regarding the fire, 15 April 2019. Matt says, “I’ve always sought out historical places where we can experience the world our ancestors occupied. Seeing the cathedral burn truly broke my heart.”
“View From Notre Dame” seeks to use the frame as a literal window within the cathedral. The view from the window depicts a gargoyle taking flight. The window and the landscape beyond are depicted in energetic marks and colors that imply change and transformation.
