What makes a creative act? How much can a process be manipulated until a turning point is reached? The artist explains, “I tend to become part of the tools and dissolve into the task, listening to what the process has to say by reducing my interventions. My practice unfolds as an ongoing journey, seeking to unravel any intention.” Nathan works mostly with acrylic on large sheets of paper. His paintings depict a universal energy and natural forces, evoking concepts like rock stratification, erosion, melting ice and geological phenomena.
In the “Flood” series, large blue waves emerge like icebergs, mountains or abyssal canyons. Nathan says, “the final artwork is formed from some sort of fluke. Huge quantities of work is discarded followed by a careful reselection afterwards. Those materials become - often months later - an inspiration for a new composition.”
After several years of exploration in the art studio, a new creative direction appeared. A narrative forms in accordance with the viewers proximity to the artwork. Moving back and forth between abstract and realism. Nathan explains, “at first glance, the artwork shows large blue strokes, but as you get closer, the eyes dive into intricate details like rivers, streams, waves, fractals, biological shapes and geographical representations.”
“My work does not depict landscapes or any figures per se - it’s an expression of a common vital force - an exploration of randomness and order. My paintings form a no-mans-land territory, a land of paint. The finished artworks are intended to be windows to a far-off place within the viewer. A visual meditation in search of greater perspectives beyond the self and an invitation to be totally present.”
