Nathan Haddad

Nathan’s creative process could be explained in summary as a search for simple solutions to complex problems. The painted parts of his paintings and collages feature his sensitivity for brushwork. He’s usually working in a limited pallet of one, two or three colors at most. But moving paint around is only a point of departure. The next steps vary from techniques as disparate as paper collage to sewing with needle and thread. The final assemblages are unique and full of intrigue, but cohesive in their shared brushwork and color pallet.

Artist Statement

While my paintings often evoke landscapes, my work primarily revolves around non-figurative forms, blending painting, paper, and folding. My process is centered on the interplay between order and randomness, raising questions about free will both in the act of creation and in our lives. The notion of unpredictability is an integral part of my working process, followed by a meticulous selection from vast amounts of fragments of work over several months – the artwork is created over time, through assembly.

My paintings often take the form of polyptychs, like windows opening onto unexplored horizons. They evoke utopian landscapes that are both solid and liquid, composed of fractal shapes, shifting between deep oceans, towering icebergs, and pilgrimage paths with no return. This visual meditation transports the viewer into other dimensions, from the macro to the microscopic. Painting thus becomes a space for contemplation, a dialogue between poetry and science.
