Philadelphia

Oil paint on wood panel and frame. 2023

33 x 40 x 6 cm

The title, “Philadelphia” specifically refers to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the surrounding park. Matt Frock would visit Fairmount Park regularly during his time living in the city. The museum of art was also an important contributor to the artists art education. As a boy with an innate interest in art, Matt would have experienced artworks by Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dali, Cy Twombly, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Jasper Johns and many other important artists.

The artist explains, “the painting reminds me of the view from the steps of the art museum. Looking West, through the pink roman columns and down the steps descending into the park a frame is formed around the natural beauty just outside. On the other side, looking East the same framing happens. However, a very different, urban environment is encapsulated by the architecture.”
