Pieter Lerooij

If you’re familiar with Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel, “Maus,” than you already have an inkling of what Pieter’s visual storytelling can be like. Pieter’s inventive use of anthropomorphic figures to act out the drama of his narratives makes for compelling theater. He is a master draftsman, painter and is not only capable of capturing character emotions, but also the drama of the space. Pieter uses lighting situations in his compositions that reference the old masters of painting and printmaking like, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, and Francisco Goya.

Pieter Lerooij

Born October 04, 1958 in Ruangoba (Belgian Congo), lives and works in Elverdinge.

He studied free graphics at the St. Lucas instiuut in Ghent. In addition to his activities as an etcher, he is also a draughtsman and painter. Although his timeless works rarely, if ever, show human faces, he succeeds in making fun of our "being human" in a penetrating way. He stops us and makes us think. No prayer cards but confrontational reality, sometimes harsh, sometimes humorous. He draws the cheerful but also the less cheerful of our entrenched thinking.
