Robert is an experienced landscape painter whose study of the British landscape and its painting tradition has naturally grown into a process of abstraction. His earlier work leaned heavily into figurative representation, but he’s developed a reputation for his mastery of the medium. There is an economy to his brushwork even Japanese and Chinese painters would have to admire. Epic landscapes appear fully formed in his paintings with apparently very little fussing. Presently, his work reflects a progression in this direction. While his landscapes are rooted in the Seventeenth-Century tradition, his paintings capture the land without resorting to the use of figurative picture making. His paintings have the effortless appearance of artworks created by a hand with years of experience and dedication. This constitutes the finest form of abstraction.
