Eileen Neff returns to the studio with her nature-focused photographs, where artificial props, like birds and miniature trees, join the staged tableaux that she constructs to rephotograph. Betsy Green’s photographs are process-centric, utilizing an antique camera and analog film to witness her profound experience in the landscape.

A Natural Paradox

20 August 2025 until 21 December 2025

As defined, a paradox is a statement that appears to be contradictory, but upon closer examination, often reveals a deeper truth. The differences in the work of Betsy Green and Eileen Neff may strike first; with the heightened saturation of Betsy’s images and Eileen’s more modest palette; with Betsy’s attachment to the physical act of photographing in the landscape, as opposed to Eileen’s necessary retreat to the studio to reconsider/reimagine her landscape experiences. But their parallel and abiding attachment and affection for the natural world announces a more penetrating connection and their desire to be present for it, one way or another. Exhibiting their work together offers a complex and illuminating dialogue, one that is supported by the strong awareness of art history’s related embraces of Nature, embedded in the work of both artists.

American artist Eileen Neff lives and works in Philadelphia. Betsy Green is an American/Dutch artist living and working in Amsterdam.
